Castries, May 30th 2016- Guinness St. Lucia, hosted its second round of the Guinness Street Football Challenge—a futsal styled, community based tournament— last weekend.

The second round, which began on Friday May 27th, saw a series of legs being held in various locations in the south throughout that weekend; the community of Micoud, home of the Super League Champions, played host to the second leg of the challenge.

Despite the low turnout, due to political meetings, two teams: U.T.L and Back Street competed in a ‘Best of Three’ which saw top Goal Scorer for the evening Dionmede Joseph— who scored a total of six goals— from U.T.L, comfortably place them into the finals.

Guinness Brand Manager, Rohan Lovence commended the two teams for participating in the round despite other activities, and equally praised their abilities and talent.

Desruisseaux hosted the third leg of the challenge and saw a remarkable turnout, with seven teams participating and a more than appreciative crowd cheering them on.

Teams Yo Pe and Agard advanced to the leg finals, with Yo Pe gaining a place in the national finals by scoring 3 goals to Agard’s 2, in a penalty shoot-out.

The final leg for the weekend took place in Vieux Fort where Italist defeated Last Minute 1-0 in a penalty shoot-out.

All winning teams for each leg received a cash prize of $300.

As the other tournaments throughout the region are coming to a close, energies are high and regional teams are expecting Team Saint Lucia to skillfully defend the title of Champion. Guinness St Lucia is encouraging local teams to participate in the challenge by pre-registering with a fee of $100 at the WLBL Offices in Vieux Fort or Castries.

The next round of the Challenge will not take place this weekend due to the general elections and is now scheduled for June 11th and 12th in various locations around the Island. Legs are not exclusive to the surrounding communities where they will be hosted; teams from across the island are welcomed to participate.

The local finals will be held in June, and teams who have advanced have a chance at winning $20,000 in cash and other prizes.

The Guinness Street Football Challenge is endorsed by the Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA).
